For example:
Looking at the Star Wars video game, we discussed the overt message and the implied message.
Overt Message In this adventure game, characters take big risks and perform amazing deeds. - Deliberate - You want the viewer to know what the message is right away Implied Message - If you buy this game, you can share in the excitement and be more like the daring character - You want the viewer to have to think about the message |
Billboard Makeup Advertisements
We watched this Dove Evolution commercial about how makeup, lights & photoshop can change an advertisement. Discussion Questions: - Is the “perfection” we see in advertisements real? - What is the difference between two photos? It was great to see how all of the students picked up the changes that the creators made to make this woman "beautiful" for a billboard ad. Overt Message: She’s beautiful and she’s on a billboard. Implied Message: If I use the makeup, I can be beautiful too. Written Work: Students were then given an advertisement & worksheet to complete the overt & implied messages. |

Entertain
Persuade
Describe
Inform - Who is it for?
Audience:
Age group (Children, Teen, Adult, Senior)
Cultural group

- We had a discussion about: Does what we watch on television reflect reality? Does reality television reflect reality? Then we watched a video clip of survivor and discussed fake reality. Would these people treat each other this way, if they weren't competing to win 1 Million Dollars? We did not get through all of our video clips this week. We will be continuing this next week.

Cereal Box Project
For the next couple of weeks we will be working on a cereal box project. Here is the full descriptive of the project we will be working on. Before created the document on Google Drawings, the students needed to fill out key information about the cereal box they will be designing.
Cereal Box Creation
A major manufacturer of nutritious and delicious breakfast cereals has just hired you. Your responsibility is to develop a brand new breakfast cereal. You will come up with the product idea, cereal name, brand name, packaging and price. Most products are aimed at specific consumers called Target Markets. Target Markets are specific consumers that have wants and needs in common and therefore would be looking for the same specific product. Three to six year old children and their buyers (parents) would want a different cereal than serious athletes or retired individuals sixty to eighty years old. The product needs to meet the needs and wants of the target market.
TARGET MARKET
The target market for your cereal is made up of children between 8-11 years old. They are starting to make new friends and enjoy playing outside. They look to other children or celebrities as their role models. They love popular music, sports, and video games. Their parents still make the ultimate decision about which breakfast cereal to buy. The parents want a nutritious cereal that will provide a good breakfast, but also one their children will eat.
Final Project Due: November 27th (At the End of Class)

To describe. The review should describe the story, characters and some of the action - without spoiling the plot or giving too much away!
To analyse. A good review gives an opinion on whether the film is good or not and why.
To advise. Finally, the review should tell the reader whether or not to go and see the film.

Happy New Year
We have started a new group project. The students will be making their own newscast and creating a news channel. This project will be taped and put into a WeVideo. This project will only be worked on once a week for the next several weeks. We have had some interruptions from assemblies, but it should be finished by mid February. Ask your child about it! They are very excited!
